Off late most romantic comedies start with the accidental encounter of a spirited girl and a reticent guy, who subsequently set off on an unexpected journey. Same is the case here though their first encounter leads to an impromptu abduction! Also most love stories end with the bride running away on her wedding day to her real Prince charming. Over here the bride remains in place though they opt for a husband interchange in the marriage mandap. The alterations might be minor but, in totality, it helps this regular rom-com gain an identity of its own.

The best alternative that the film chooses, however, is having Genelia D'Souza play the free-spirited girl over the over-exploited Kareenas and Katrinas that the genre has often seen. Genelia not only brings freshness to the genre but her camaraderie with Riteish Deshmukh is at full throttle as compared to all their earlier outings.

To escape an undesired wedlock, Mini (Genelia D'Souza) gets herself kidnapped by the hands of a rickshaw driver Viren (Riteish Deshmukh). The unassuming Viren turns victim of the situation and has no option but to carry forward with Mini's plans. Until the duo actually gets kidnapped by some gangster.

The writing by Dhieyo Sandhu might not be path-breaking stuff but doesn't fall in the predictable territory either. The first half works towards building the rapport between the lead pair through their escapades. While the narrative, more or less, keeps you hooked, the graph dips intermittently and one wishes the escapades should have been more eventful. There isn't any physical intimacy between the couple though their contrasting characters contribute to their credible chemistry.

The second half lands in more familiar territory amidst a North Indian sarso-ke-khet backdrop. You are randomly introduced to Viren's extended joint family and their specialized family business - kidnapping. There are lessons on optimization in the abduction trade and endorsement of Indian tourism with lectures on how to treat foreign travelers with respect. Evidently they contribute nothing to the plot but are amusing nonetheless. Further you are assured that this family setting is the ideal place where 'Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha' between the lead pair.

Fortunately director Mandeep Kumar has control over things and doesn't let the film go out of hands. Neither does he let Genelia's animated act go overboard, nor does he overuse the cultural backdrop. Unlike most films in similar vein (Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani), there is no third angle in the love story and thankfully so. The film employs the abduction trade on a lighthearted backdrop resulting to some good humour. However a minor bone of contention is that it subsequently uses the same aspect to set a moral tone in the climax.

The film primarily works thanks to the convincing chemistry and performances by the lead pair. Riteish Deshmukh is resourcefully restrained, perfectly poised and, needless to say, his comic timing is impeccable. At the same time he allows Genelia to take lead as the film largely revolves around her character. And Genelia does complete justice to her meaty role with a refreshing and dynamic act. Her cute looks and electrifying smile add to her appeal. From the character cast, Om Puri gets the best lines and induces frequent laughter. Chitrashi Rawat and Navin Prabhakar are wasted. Veena Malik's item number was avoidable.

Atif Aslam's 'Piya O Re Piya' stands out in the album but it will probably not catch your lips. Veena Malik's item number is another dud of the album. Basically, the colourful ambiance of the songs catches more attention than the tunes.

Undoubtedly, 'Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya' is a feel good film and you won't find many dull moments but you should also not expect anything fresh.

A good watch this weekend if you are more into Hindi films and don't want to see big Hollywood films releasing alongside 'Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya'.

Ekk Deewana Tha: Movie Review with Details | Starring Prateik and Amy Jackson

The director of 'Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein', this is the best introduction one can give of Gautham Menon to the Hindi film fans. The master of romantic stories is returning to Hindi films after a span of ten years with 'Ekk Deewana Tha'.

This love story gives you the option of two alternate endings to choose from. Irrespective of any standalone version that you choose, you still get the feeling of having watched multiple endings. That's because, what starts as a lighthearted teenage romance matures into a long-drawn-out saga in the second half and every time you assume that the end credits would show up, the film extends itself for another few minutes. The version I watched, however, lived up to its 'happy ending' claim, for the audience were happy that the film ended.

Ekk Deewana Tha essentially endorses the love-at-first-sight cliche. Sachin (Prateik Babbar) falls head over heals for the girl-next-floor, Jesse (Amy Jackson). But he is a Hindu; she is a Christian and also a year elder to him. Her family doesn't consent of their romance.

On the contrary, since the basic idea is about love-at-first-sight, no time is wasted in the first half on their preliminary bonding and the story comes straight to the point. The hero professes his love pretty early and the narrative proceeds at a good pace. Love-at-first-sight is primarily driven by physical beauty and the director pulls off the fact credibly by casting the gorgeous girl Amy Jackson as the female lead. Any average man would fall for her natural charm.

The film basically attempts to capture the innocence and insanity behind teenage first love. While it does that effectively to an extent in the initial reels, at the same time it glorifies adolescent romance as a heroic achievement. At the risk of sounding a moral police, it's important to point that such blatant endorsement of love motivated purely on physical attraction could manipulate and mislead young minds. One could still have ignored the love-at-first-sight syndrome as an age-old Bollywood formula had the film been entertaining otherwise. Sadly the patchy second half disappoints even on that level.

The interval point where Jesse call offs her arranged marriage for Sachin makes you wonder if a family feud would follow in the second half. But all your apprehensions prove wrong as the family disapproval is kept on the backburner and what comes forth is Jesse's personal dilemma. What seemed like a perfect romance goes for a toss with Jesse's abrupt change of mind and like the hero, even the viewer, keeps asking what went wrong. However neither does her pain of separation with love register nor does her sacrifice for parents. And then the film keeps repeating itself with cyclic flashback shots every now and then.

Director Gautham Menon's idea might have been to show how perception and priorities in life change, firstly as love takes over and subsequently when sanity strikes. But he's only partially successful in making the point and loses the audience somewhere in between. With a film-inside-film setting, he also tries to tap the thought of how every heartbroken lover believes their love story is the epitome of tragedy and could be interpreted as a novel or a film. But even that doesn't add depth or dimension to the narrative.

Much of the storytelling progresses through transitional songs but at times it becomes difficult to comprehend which is a dream sequence and which is a factual montage. Every time the graph falls, AR Rahman's music is supposed to take over and add intensity. Though it's not a hurdle-free love story, the treatment is more or less feel-good. The original Tamil ( Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa) and Telugu ( Ye Maaya Chesave) versions had a tragic end though an alternate happy ending is devised for the Hindi version perhaps assuming the national audience would be more pleased with triumph of love. Alas, over tragic or happy, a better ending was the need of the hour.

Prateik shows vast improvement from all his earlier acts but one still can't say he has arrived. The volume added to his vocal chord helps but he seems uncomfortable while breaking into a jig, every once in a while. Amy Jackson looks ravishing. Often draped in saris, she carries off the Indian outfit gracefully but the extra tan added to her skin-tone seems splotchy and absolutely unnecessary. In terms of performance, she is confident and credible enough and never disappoints. Together Prateik and Amy bring refreshing chemistry to the love story. Manu Rishi continues his comic sidekick act pretty well.

The translation of Deewana can have different connotations from crazy to mad. Ekk Deewana Tha starts as a cool and crazy love story but by the end it could make you mad.

Movie Ratings : 3 stars OUT of 5.

A light hearten romantic comedy must watch for this Valentine

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a rom-com about two diagonally opposite individuals. The boy leads a bland and boring life. The girl is blabbermouth and full of life. Their paths cross. And as expected, opposites attract. So what's new?

Rahul (Imran Khan) could never come out of the shadow of his parents who tried molding him in their customized templates. A random encounter with Riana (Kareena Kapoor) leads to a few drinks and they wake up next morning to realize they got married in their drunken stupor. Annulling their accidental wedlock would take a few days.

Meanwhile Riana loses her rented apartment and checks-in with Rahul. The uptight Rahul loosens up in Riana's company and starts 'living life'. Cupid strikes Rahul over a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai song. Further they fly to India where Riana expectedly introduces Rahul to her extended joint family - the only variation being they are Christian folks over the perpetual Punjabi prototypes. What follows includes misunderstandings, separations and reunions...

Let the accidental marriage idea not mislead you. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is nowhere in the zone of Hollywood flicks like What Happens in Vegas (2008) or The Proposal (2009).

The accidental marriage theme is employed more as a gimmick and doesn't contribute anything to the story. In fact the makers take the convenient route and entirely do away with the actual marriage scene from the narrative. Also the lead pair chooses to stay together and is never compelled by any legal obligations.

The writing by Ayesha Devitre and Shakun Batra is a case of too much screenplay without much story. The overall tone of the film is refreshingly lighthearted and the chemistry between Kareena and Imran is conversational over corporeal. But somewhere the story seems too shallow after a point with no tangible plot-point conflicts and the screenplay tries to fill that void with birthday parties, New Year celebrations, school revisits and such similar elements that remain external to the central plot.

Music by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by the bard of the hour, Amitabh Bhattacharyya, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a gentle little film, where even the regulation song with Americans dancing to Bollywood music in the middle of Vegas don't look so bad. Thank you, Imran, you're all grown up. And thank you Kareena for playing Rihanna with a lightbulb inside your head. Her skin is fresh, her eyes glow, her hair tumbles, and she is a good shoulder for Imran to cry on.

Nevertheless you find solace in the film's subdued sense of humour and subtle temperament. The subtlety is not per se but largely because the story is devoid of any theatrical twists. And the residual dramatic sequences are handled with utmost sensitivity by director Shakun Batra, like Imran's climactic outburst at the dinner table. The dialogues comprise more of carefree and casual conversations over dramatically designed punches and go smoothly with the natural flow of scenes. There's an intentional aberration in the end to set the film in a league of its own but could disappoint the ones viewing the film as a Valentine special.

Kareena Kapoor is beautiful in both her looks and acts. Despite playing the chirpy-outgoing girl, she never goes overboard and is absolutely adorable. Playing the high-strung guy with deadpan expressions comes naturally to Imran Khan. He comes up with a fairly decent act. Their chemistry is informal and affable. Ratna Pathak Shah as the elite fashion-fanatic mother is too good. Boman Irani as the business-minded father is restrained in his role. Sonia Mehra (after some disastrous films) comes across as desirable in her one-scene cameo. Ram Kapoor gets no scope. The actor playing Kareena's father is funny and a fresh deviation from the regular father figures of Bollywood.

Hrithik Roshan is multitasking -- he is not only promoting his forthcoming release "Agneepath", but also working on his fitness for his role in his father's production venture "Krrish 2".

"Krrish 2" is the sequel to 2006 superhero film "Krrish", directed and written by Hrithik's father, Rakesh Roshan. The cast and crew of the film have already wrapped up the first schedule.

"I am very happy because the script is very, very good and papa is very happy for the first schedule because it has gone very well. It was difficult but we managed," said Hrithik whose journey with supernatural thrillers began with "Koi... Mil Gaya" in 2003.

Meanwhile, Hrithik's fans are eagerly awaiting "Agneepath", which releases Jan 26. He plays Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, a role essayed by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in the 1990 originalthat won him national award for his power-packed performance.

Amongst the first recall values for the original Agneepath is Amitabh Bachchan's trademark self-introduction dialogue of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. While evaluating its official remake, the first thing that crosses your mind is how the reinterpretation of this signature scene would be. Unlike in the original, the monologue plays pretty late in the remake, whereby it establishes Vijay's identity over merely introducing him and with such individuality and elegance that it pays a perfect homage to the original, while at the same time not blatantly imitating it. That is how a remake is supposed to be! Retaining the spirit of the original and having a soul of its own. This dialogue kinda summarizes the overall aura of the remake.

The basic backdrop remains the same. Kancha Cheena (Sanjay Dutt) is the uncrowned king of Mandwa Island and terminates the rebellious village schoolmaster. The master's son swears revenge and grows up to be Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) under the wings of Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor). Lala who trades in human and drug trafficking, rules the Mumbai underbelly. Vijay uses Lala to reach Kancha and thereby reclaim his island and self-esteem.

While the primary plotline remains the same as Mukul Anand's classic, director Karan Malhotra along with co-writer Ila Bedi Datta refreshingly revamps the screenplay giving it a new structure and approach. So you never miss the omission of Mithun Chakravarthy's award-winning Krishnan Iyer from the original and welcome the induction of Rishi Kapoor's foul-mouthed and despicable kasai character. If at all the film falls into predictable zone, it's not because you are familiar with the original but because at the core of it, the story remains a basic revenge drama. The film employs the age-old conflict of a reformist school-teacher versus the conniving zamindar, duping the villagers of their lands.

The remake isn't essentially remodeled to modern times because the film retains its original era thereby reviving the raw essence of the 1990 film. And beyond the epoch, Malhotra also imparts the cinematic treatment of that time period to his film. So both the villain and hero have stylized entries, their confrontations boast of high-voltage drama and, in the climax, when the bruised and battered protagonist rises to take revenge (in exactly the same manner like his father was killed), he wins instant applause. Also the idea of Vijay concealing his identity from his teenaged sister is so intrinsic of the era.

Where the new Agneepath raises the bar is by casting Sanjay Dutt as the baddie. In his black-attire and bald-look, Dutt has such solid screen-presence that the director makes things difficult for himself with a challenge of how would Hrithik's hero overpower the villain. Thereby the film employs some extreme action, which is more brutal than boisterous, to justify Kancha's imposing persona and the subsequent seethe in Vijay's revenge. Thankfully, what puts Agneepath a notch above the recent mindless actioners is that it has a basic human connect which it reasonably balances with the extreme action and never blatantly exploits any emotion.

Beyond his hold on the subject, Karan Malhotra succeeds in extracting inspiring performances from the impressive cast. The usually suave Hrithik Roshan convincingly glides into his coarse character here and has a towering presence. He completely redefines Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and never in his act do you see even a glimpse of the original. Sanjay Dutt reeks of menace and malice through his sadistic laughs. At times he overdoes his guffaws but therein lays his strength, which he uses to the hilt. Rishi Kapoor has never looked or played so mean onscreen before. As the kohl-eyed Rauf Lala, the affable actor reinvents his screen image with a beastly streak to his character. So good is the actor that you never get enough of him. Arish Bhiwandiwala as the young Vijay Chauhan puts in a confident act. Priyanka Chopra, Zarina and Om Puri are functional.

Sanjay Dutt - don’t go by his recent quotes comparing his laugh to the Joker(!). Just go watch him. He probably kept Mission Kashmir in mind while shooting this. That one became a Hrithik Roshan film. This one is also a Sanjay Dutt film – easily among his best recent performances.

The other stalwart is the ever-dependable Rishi Kapoor - completely despicable and thoroughly enjoyable through the film. And yes, he wears lots of surma around the eyes. So completely old-world Bollywood.
Priyanka Chopra hangs in there as Kaali, but hers isn’t the role that you remember, simply because there’s not much to it.

Piyush Mishra's dialogues are impressive with rhetoric punches every now and then. And even when the lines go unrefined for Rishi Kapoor's crude character, it leaves immense impact without crossing the familial domain. Cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and Kiran Deohans is remarkable. Akiv Ali's editing is accomplished and despite the film having a three-hour runtime, you never lose the narrative for a moment. The only slacker is the obligatory romance track (Priyanka Chopra) but thankfully even that is kept short.

The music and background score by Ajay-Atul blend with the screenplay – it’s loud and boisterous and adds to the earthiness of the film. Yes – I am coming to Chikni Chameli. Katrina Kaif adds to the tempo, which incidentally picks up again with this song, as if on cue. Saw lots of happy faces in the audience around me. They loved it.

What’s Mumbai without Ganpati Bappa – Deva shree Ganesha is fabulously picturised and sung by Ajay Gogavale. I loved Gun gun guna when I heard it, thoroughly enjoyed it in the film as well.

Now for the few missteps in the film; the pace falters in both the first and second half despite the action. It doesn’t escape the usual Hindi film fail – it’s too long. A pointless song, a few extra flashbacks spoil a hardcore Bollywood masala flick.

With Bollywood being obsessed with remakes in recent times, Agneepath is an important lesson on how to pay proper tribute to the original. Despite the original being his home production, Karan Johar attempts playing with fire (treading uncharted territory) with Agneepath and emerges victorious. Agneepath has the fire for a lustrous entertainer!
